How to Renew Your Roadtax and Car Insurance in Malaysia

Every vehicle owner in Malaysia renews two things each year: motor insurance and roadtax. Many drivers are unsure which comes first and end up scrambling at the deadline. Here is the whole sequence.

Insurance first, roadtax second

This is the most misunderstood part. JPJ will not issue roadtax without an active insurance policy. The order is always:

  1. Renew your motor insurance or takaful.
  2. Once the policy is active, roadtax can be processed.

If you try roadtax first, the request is rejected — nothing is broken, the prerequisite simply is not met.

What you need on hand

For most private renewals, you only need:

  • Vehicle registration number (plate number)
  • The registered owner's identity card number
  • The postcode where the vehicle is used
  • A phone number and email to receive policy documents

For company-owned vehicles, the company registration number replaces the identity card number.

How early should you start?

Start two to four weeks before expiry. That leaves room to:

  • Compare prices across insurers instead of accepting the first offer
  • Sort out any NCD record issues before they become urgent
  • Wait for physical roadtax delivery if you need it

Driving on expired roadtax or insurance is an offence, and an accident without active cover means the full cost lands on you.

Market value versus agreed value

While renewing, you will see two ways the sum insured can be set:

  • Market value — cover follows what your vehicle is worth today. Lower premium, but the payout shrinks each year.
  • Agreed value — a fixed amount agreed upfront. Higher premium, but you know exactly what you receive in a total loss.

Pick based on how much surprise you are willing to absorb at claim time.

Mistakes that cost drivers

  • Leaving it to the last day. A failed payment or a record mismatch leaves no room to recover.
  • Auto-accepting the renewal notice. Insurer pricing shifts every year; last year's cheapest is not automatically this year's.
  • Forgetting an address change. Physical roadtax goes to the old address.
  • Skipping the add-ons that matter. Flood and windscreen cover are not part of a basic policy.
